Learn Stock Trading

This learning path organises stock market education into eight modules — from opening a demat account to tax-efficient investing and algorithmic trading. Each topic includes a plain-language summary. Where we have published a full guide in our Learn Hub, you will see a link to read the complete article. Use these notes as a starting point, then open the linked guides for detail.

StockAnalyzer AI is not a SEBI-registered adviser. This content is for education only. Paper trade with our simulator, use our calculators, and read our Learn Hub articles before risking real capital.

We update modules when regulations, tax rules, or market structure change. Last reviewed: July 2026.

Indian equities trade on NSE and BSE through a demat account linked to your bank. Before buying your first share, understand what a stock represents (partial ownership), how indices like Nifty 50 track the market, and the difference between intraday trades (same-day square-off) and delivery (holding in demat). Market hours are 9:15 AM–3:30 PM IST on weekdays, with pre-open and post-close sessions for order matching.

What is a stock?

Ownership in a company, how shares are issued, BSE vs NSE.

When you buy a share, you own a tiny fraction of that company. Listed companies raise capital through an IPO; after listing, shares trade between investors on the exchange. Price moves with earnings expectations, news, and market sentiment — not because the company sends you money each day (that is dividends, when declared).

Quick note

How to open a Demat account

Zerodha, Groww, Upstox — the process and what to expect.

Choose a SEBI-registered broker (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, etc.). Complete KYC online with PAN, Aadhaar, and bank proof. Your demat account holds shares electronically; the trading account executes buy/sell orders. Compare brokerage, platform stability, and support — not just account-opening offers.

Quick note

Market orders vs limit orders

Types of orders, when to use each, slippage explained.

A market order executes immediately at the best available price — fast but you may get a worse price in volatile stocks. A limit order sets your maximum buy or minimum sell price; it fills only if the market reaches that level. Use limits for illiquid small caps; market orders are common for large Nifty stocks with tight spreads.

Market timings and trading sessions

9:15 AM–3:30 PM, pre-market, post-market, circuit breakers.

Regular session: 9:15 AM–3:30 PM. Pre-open (9:00–9:15) collects orders for opening price discovery. After 3:30, some brokers allow AMO (after-market orders) for the next day. Circuit filters pause trading if a stock moves beyond daily limits — protecting against flash crashes and manipulation.

Quick note

What is intraday vs delivery?

Differences, taxes (STT, LTCG, STCG), and which suits you.

Intraday positions must be squared off the same day; you never take delivery to demat. Delivery means holding shares overnight — eligible for dividends and long-term capital gains tax after one year (rules change; check current IT Act). Intraday attracts higher turnover and stress; most wealth is built via delivery + SIPs.
