How Are Brokerage & Trading Charges Calculated in India?

Every trade on NSE/BSE involves more than just broker commission. On top of brokerage, you pay statutory charges set by SEBI, exchanges, and the government: STT, exchange transaction charges, stamp duty, GST, and (for delivery sells) DP charges.

Charges by Segment

  • Equity Delivery: ₹0 brokerage at most discount brokers, but STT (0.1% both legs) and DP charges (~₹17.7/scrip on sell) apply.
  • Equity Intraday: ₹20 or 0.03% per order (whichever lower), STT 0.025% on sell only.
  • Futures: ₹20 or 0.03% per order, STT 0.02% on sell only.
  • Options: ₹20 flat per order, STT 0.1% on sell premium.

These figures are close approximations of standard 2026 discount-broker pricing and regulatory rates — actual charges can shift slightly with SEBI/exchange circulars, so always cross-check your contract note before relying on this for tax filing.
