Gold vs Silver vs Stocks in India: Compare Their Roles and Risks

Equities, gold and silver respond to different forces. Shares represent an ownership interest in a business; gold and silver do not generate company earnings. All three can fall in rupee terms over a period that matters to you. Compare each exposure with your goal, liquidity needs, costs and other holdings before choosing an allocation.

What equities give you

Equity returns come from changes in business value and, sometimes, dividends. A diversified fund reduces dependence on one company but does not prevent a market-wide decline. Check the benchmark, fees and historical drawdowns of any fund you consider; a past average is not a forecast for your holding period.

What gold gives you

Gold has no company cash flow. Its rupee price can reflect international gold prices and the exchange rate, among other factors. It may diversify a portfolio in some periods, but it is not insurance against every equity fall. Physical gold adds storage, purity and making-charge considerations; an ETF has expenses and tracking differences. Existing Sovereign Gold Bonds have issue-specific terms and tax treatment, so read the RBI issue document and current rules before buying one in the secondary market.

What silver gives you

Silver has industrial as well as investment demand, and its price can be volatile. A silver ETF or physical purchase also has different costs, liquidity and tax considerations. Do not infer a suitable holding period or percentage from a generic rule; decide what role it would serve and what loss you could tolerate.

Questions to answer before allocating

  • When will the money be needed, and would a temporary decline force a sale?
  • Are existing mutual funds or retirement accounts already providing equity or commodity exposure?
  • What fees, spreads, storage costs and taxes apply to the exact product?
  • How would the whole portfolio change if both equity and metals fell together?

SEBI describes asset allocation as matching investments to goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Diversification can reduce dependence on one outcome, but it does not guarantee against loss. Review the full portfolio rather than treating age alone as an allocation formula.
