What is IPO GMP, and should you rely on it?
Grey market premium (GMP) is the extra price some unofficial dealers say they will pay for an IPO share before it lists. If an IPO is priced at ₹100 and the GMP is ₹20, the grey market expects a listing near ₹120. These trades happen outside the stock exchanges, are not regulated, and carry no investor protection.
GMP is best treated as a rough sentiment signal. It can swing sharply in the last days before listing, and a high GMP does not guarantee listing gains. Official subscription data — especially demand from qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) — plus the company's prospectus (RHP) are far more reliable inputs.
Mainboard vs SME IPOs
Mainboard IPOs list on the main NSE and BSE platforms. SME IPOs list on NSE Emerge or BSE SME, usually have smaller issue sizes and larger minimum lots, and can be far more volatile and illiquid. Read the RHP carefully before applying to either.
IPO allotment status
Allotment status tells you whether shares were assigned to you after the issue closes. Check it only on the official registrar or exchange website, and never share your PAN or application number anywhere else.
