Tax is shown as a single estimate at maturity; in practice FD interest is taxed each year as it accrues. Compare the post-tax return with inflation to see your real gain.

Getting the most from a fixed deposit

  • Ladder your FDs: split money across 1, 2 and 3-year deposits so some matures every year, reducing reinvestment and liquidity risk.
  • Stay within insurance: DICGC covers up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank.
  • Mind premature withdrawal: breaking an FD early usually attracts a penalty and a lower rate.
  • Compare post-tax: at a 30% slab, a 7% FD returns under 5% after tax — often close to inflation.

Frequently asked questions

How is FD maturity calculated?

With quarterly compounding, maturity = P × (1 + r/4)^(4 × t), where P is the deposit, r the annual rate and t the tenure in years. For example, ₹1 lakh at 6.5% for 5 years grows to about ₹1,38,042.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. FD interest is taxed at your income-tax slab rate in the year it accrues. Banks deduct TDS once interest crosses the yearly threshold; you can submit Form 15G (or 15H for senior citizens) if your total income is below the taxable limit.

What is the TDS limit on FD interest?

For FY 2025-26 onwards, banks deduct TDS when interest from one bank exceeds ₹50,000 a year for individuals below 60, and ₹1 lakh for senior citizens. Confirm the current limit with your bank.

Is my FD safe?

Bank deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including interest. Spreading larger amounts across banks keeps more of your money within the insured limit.

FD or debt mutual fund?

A bank FD states a contractual interest rate and deposit terms; a debt fund has a market-linked value. Tax treatment depends on the product and current rules. Compare liquidity, costs, risk and the date you need the money; do not assume the same tax rate for every holding.
