How to choose between old and new regime
If your total old-regime deductions are small, the new regime almost always costs less.
Heavy deductions — high HRA in a metro, full 80C, 80D and home-loan interest — can make the old regime cheaper at higher incomes.
Salaried employees can choose the regime each year while filing their return; business owners have limited switching options.
Tax-saving investments should still suit your goals — do not buy a product only for a deduction.
Frequently asked questions
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in FY 2026-27?
Yes, under the new tax regime. The Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 makes taxable income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free. Salaried individuals also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. The rebate does not apply to special-rate income such as capital gains.
Which is better: old or new tax regime?
The new regime usually wins unless you claim large deductions such as HRA, the full ₹1.5 lakh under 80C, 80D health insurance and home-loan interest. Enter your deductions above to compare both for your income.
What are the new tax regime slabs for FY 2026-27?
Nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4–8 lakh, 10% from ₹8–12 lakh, 15% from ₹12–16 lakh, 20% from ₹16–20 lakh, 25% from ₹20–24 lakh and 30% above ₹24 lakh, plus 4% cess.
What is the standard deduction?
₹75,000 under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime, available to salaried employees and pensioners.
Does this calculator include capital gains?
No. Capital gains on shares and mutual funds are taxed at special rates and are not eligible for the 87A rebate. Use this tool for salary, business and other slab-rate income.
